A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component E4X AnyName Frame Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The Javascript interpreter (jsinterp.c) in Mozilla and Firefox before 1.5.1 does not properly dereference objects, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via unknown attack vectors related to garbage collection.
The weakness was disclosed 02/02/2006 by Brendan Eich (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2006-08 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0292. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21994 (CentOS 4 : thunderbird (CESA-2006:0330)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117751 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0200)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9037.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24430), Tenable (21994), SecurityFocus (BID 16476†), Secunia (SA18700†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-10306†). The entries VDB-2026, VDB-2022, VDB-2024 and VDB-2025 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
