A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component ART Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Buffer overflow in the ART Image Rendering component (jgdw400.dll) in Microsoft Windows XP SP1 and Sp2, Server 2003 SP1 and earlier, and Windows 98 and Me allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted ART image that causes heap corruption.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2006. The weakness was published 06/13/2006 with iDEFENSE Labs as MS06-022 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-2378 since 05/15/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90317 (Microsoft ART Image Rendering Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-022)).
Applying the patch MS06-022 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4457.
