A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.0/7.0.1/7.0.2/7.0.3 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code. Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple Quicktime before 7.0.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a GIF image file with a crafted Netscape Navigator Application Extension Block that modifies the heap in the Picture Modifier block.
The weakness was shared 01/11/2006 by Karl Lynn and Fang Xing (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3713. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20395 (QuickTime < 7.0.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38513 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2006-01-10)).
Upgrading to version 7.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4138.
