A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Database 10.2.1/10.2.2/10.2.3 (Database Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function DBMS_SNAP_INTERNAL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Oracle Database 10g uses a NULL pDacl parameter when calling the SetSecurityDescriptorDacl function to create discretionary access control lists (DACLs), which allows local users to gain privileges.
The weakness was presented 04/18/2007 by Cesar Cerrudo with Oracle (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-1442 since 03/13/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
