A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.6 (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.7 and Thunderbird before 1.5.0.7 makes it easy for users to accept self-signed certificates for the auto-update mechanism, which might allow remote user-assisted attackers to use DNS spoofing to trick users into visiting a malicious site and accepting a malicious certificate for the Mozilla update site, which can then be used to install arbitrary code on the next update.
The bug was discovered 09/14/2006. The weakness was published 09/15/2006 by Martijn Wargers (shutdown) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4567 since 09/06/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9090.
