A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.3.5-9 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function AllocateImageColormap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
ImageMagick before 6.3.5-9 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted image file that triggers (1) an infinite loop in the ReadDCMImage function, related to ReadBlobByte function calls; or (2) an infinite loop in the ReadXCFImage function, related to ReadBlobMSBLong function calls.
The weakness was shared 09/24/2007 by regenrecht with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared at studio.imagemagick.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4985 since 09/19/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26978 (FreeBSD : ImageMagick -- multiple vulnerabilities (f5b29ec0-71f9-11dc-8c6a-00304881ac9a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120302 (Solaris Multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at imagemagick.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
