A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.3.5-9 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function ReadBlobString. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. ImageMagick before 6.3.5-9 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted image file that triggers (1) an infinite loop in the ReadDCMImage function, related to ReadBlobByte function calls; or (2) an infinite loop in the ReadXCFImage function, related to ReadBlobMSBLong function calls.
The weakness was published 09/24/2007 by regenrecht (Website). The advisory is available at studio.imagemagick.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4985 since 09/19/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at imagemagick.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
