ImageMagick up to 6.3.5-9 ReadDIBImage memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in ImageMagick up to 6.3.5-9 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function ReadDIBImage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Sign extension error in the ReadDIBImage function in ImageMagick before 6.3.5-9 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted width value in an image file, which triggers an integer overflow and a heap-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 09/19/2007. The weakness was released 09/24/2007 by regenrecht (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at studio.imagemagick.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4988 since 09/19/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31995 (CentOS 3 / 4 / 5 : ImageMagick (CESA-2008:0145)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120302 (Solaris Multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick).

Upgrading to version 6.3.5-9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at imagemagick.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36737), Tenable (31995), SecurityFocus (BID 25765†), OSVDB (41325†) and Secunia (SA26926†).
