ImageMagick up to 6.3.5-9 ReadDCMImage resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.3.5-9 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function ReadDCMImage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

ImageMagick before 6.3.5-9 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted image file that triggers (1) an infinite loop in the ReadDCMImage function, related to ReadBlobByte function calls; or (2) an infinite loop in the ReadXCFImage function, related to ReadBlobMSBLong function calls.

The bug was discovered 09/19/2007. The weakness was disclosed 09/24/2007 by regenrecht (Website). The advisory is shared for download at studio.imagemagick.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4985 since 09/19/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26978 (FreeBSD : ImageMagick -- multiple vulnerabilities (f5b29ec0-71f9-11dc-8c6a-00304881ac9a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120302 (Solaris Multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at imagemagick.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36740), Tenable (26978), SecurityFocus (BID 25764†), OSVDB (41332†) and Secunia (SA26926†). The entries VDB-3330, VDB-3329, VDB-3331 and VDB-24106 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
