Oracle Database Server 8.1.7.4 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Oracle Database Server 8.1.7.4 (Database Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in MDSYS.MD in Oracle Database 8.1.7.4, 9.0.1.5, 9.2.0.7, and 10.1.0.4 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors involving certain public procedures, aka DB05.

The weakness was disclosed 01/17/2007 by Mark Litchfield (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0272 since 01/16/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56055 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2007 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19215 (Oracle January 2007 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31541), Tenable (56055), SecurityFocus (BID 22083†), OSVDB (32911†) and Secunia (SA23794†). The entries VDB-2839, VDB-2840, VDB-2838 and VDB-2841 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
