Multiple buffer overflows in MDSYS.MD in Oracle Database 8.1.7.4, 9.0.1.5, 9.2.0.7, and 10.1.0.4 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors involving certain public procedures, aka DB05.
The weakness was disclosed 01/17/2007 by Mark Litchfield (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0272 since 01/16/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56055 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2007 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19215 (Oracle January 2007 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
