CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.8 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality in the library library/logs/crashreporter/. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

crashdump in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.8 allows local users in the admin group to modify arbitrary files or gain privileges via a symlink attack on application logs in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/.

The bug was discovered 01/28/2007. The weakness was released 01/28/2007 by Kevin Finisterre (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0467 since 01/23/2007. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24811 (Mac OS X < 10.4.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115527 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Security Update 2007-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-03-13)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
