A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.9/2.0.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function document.write of the component LOAD Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.9 and 2.0.0.1, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.8 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via JavaScript onUnload handlers that modify the structure of a document, wich triggers memory corruption due to the lack of a finalize hook on DOM window objects.
The bug was discovered 02/23/2007. The weakness was disclosed 02/22/2007 by Michal Zalewski as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1092 since 02/26/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known.
The exploit is available at lcamtuf.coredump.cx. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24703 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2007:0077)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156209 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2007:0078)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
