Mutt 1.5.13 and earlier does not properly use the --status-fd argument when invoking GnuPG, which prevents Mutt from visually distinguishing between signed and unsigned portions of OpenPGP messages with multiple components, which allows remote attackers to forge the contents of a message without detection.

The weakness was shared 03/06/2007 by Core Security with CORE Security Technologies as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-1268 since 03/04/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
