Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.12 and SeaMonkey before 1.1.8 allows user-assisted remote attackers to trick the user into uploading arbitrary files via label tags that shift focus to a file input field, aka "focus spoofing."
The weakness was published 02/08/2008 by hong Gregory Fleisher with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2008-03 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0414 since 01/23/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67676 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : seamonkey (ELSA-2008-0208)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115710 (Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities February 2008 Security Update (MFSA 2008-01 through MFSA 2008-10)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
