Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the component Design Mode Frame Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.12 and Thunderbird before 2.0.0.12 does not properly manage a delay timer used in confirmation dialogs, which might allow remote attackers to trick users into confirming an unsafe action, such as remote file execution, by using a timer to change the window focus, aka the "dialog refocus bug" or "ffclick2".

The weakness was presented 02/08/2008 by David Bloom as MFSA2008-08 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-0591 since 02/05/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30220 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:0103)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115710 (Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities February 2008 Security Update (MFSA 2008-01 through MFSA 2008-10)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40384), Tenable (30220), SecurityFocus (BID 24293†), Secunia (SA28758†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1019339†). See VDB-3567, VDB-3585, VDB-3584 and VDB-3583 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
