Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.12 and SeaMonkey before 1.1.8 allows remote attackers to steal navigation history and cause a denial of service (crash) via images in a page that uses designMode frames, which triggers memory corruption related to resize handles.

The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2008 by Charles McAuley (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2008-06 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0419 since 01/23/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30220 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:0103)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115710 (Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities February 2008 Security Update (MFSA 2008-01 through MFSA 2008-10)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
