CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown code of the component chrome URI Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.12, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.12, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.8, when using "flat" addons, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary Javascript, image, and stylesheet files via the chrome: URI scheme, as demonstrated by stealing session information from sessionstore.js.

The bug was discovered 01/19/2008. The weakness was disclosed 01/24/2008 by Gerry Eisenhaur (moz_bug_r_a4) with isen (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hiredhacker.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0418 since 01/23/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30220 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:0103)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165669 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla Firefox and Seamonkey (SUSE-SA:2008:008)).

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40384), Exploit-DB (31051), Tenable (30220), SecurityFocus (BID 27406†) and OSVDB (41187†). The entries VDB-3588, VDB-3590, VDB-3586 and VDB-3587 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
