PHP up to 4.0.0 Error iptcembed sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 4.0.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function iptcembed of the component Error Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

PHP 4.0.0 through 4.4.6 and 5.0.0 through 5.2.1 allows context-dependent attackers to read arbitrary memory locations via an interruption that triggers a user space error handler that changes a parameter to an arbitrary pointer, as demonstrated via the iptcembed function, which calls certain convert_to_* functions with its input parameters.

The bug was discovered 03/29/2007. The weakness was shared 04/05/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gentoo.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1883 since 04/05/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26942 (GLSA-200710-02 : PHP: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
