Apple Mac OS X 10.4 Local Privilege Escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a local privilege escalation vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Login Window in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.9 does not display the screen saver authentication dialog in certain circumstances when waking from sleep, even though the "require a password to wake the computer from sleep" option is enabled, which allows local users to bypass authentication controls.

The bug was discovered 04/17/2007. The weakness was presented 04/24/2007 by Landon Fuller with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0738 since 02/05/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25081 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115539 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2007-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-04-19)).

It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (25081), SecurityFocus (BID 23569†), OSVDB (34863†), Secunia (SA24966†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017939†).
