The Login Window in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.9 displays the software update window beneath the loginwindow authentication dialog in certain circumstances related to running scheduled tasks, which allows local users to bypass authentication controls.

The bug was discovered 04/17/2007. The weakness was shared 04/24/2007 by Landon Fuller with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0739 since 02/05/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25081 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.
