Integer overflow in Adobe Flash Player 9.0.115.0 and earlier, and 8.0.39.0 and earlier, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SWF file with a negative Scene Count value, which passes a signed comparison, is used as an offset of a NULL pointer, and triggers a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 04/08/2008. The weakness was released 04/09/2008 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at adobe.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0071 since 01/04/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31964 (SuSE 10 Security Update : flash-player (ZYPP Patch Number 5159)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115779 (Adobe Flash Player Code Execution and Security Bypass Vulnerabilities (APSB08-11)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13820. In this case the pattern |A8 15| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6147.
