Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Javascript Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple vulnerabilities in the JavaScript engine for Mozilla Firefox 1.5.x before 1.5.0.12 and 2.x before 2.0.0.4, Thunderbird 1.5.x before 1.5.0.12 and 2.x before 2.0.0.4, and SeaMonkey 1.0.9 and 1.1.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 05/30/2007. The weakness was published 05/30/2007 by Nicolas Derouet (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2868 since 05/29/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36608 (CentOS 4 / 5 : devhelp / firefox / yelp (CESA-2007:0400)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156165 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2007-0401)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8965.
