Multiple vulnerabilities in the layout engine for Mozilla Firefox 1.5.x before 1.5.0.12 and 2.x before 2.0.0.4, Thunderbird 1.5.x before 1.5.0.12 and 2.x before 2.0.0.4, and SeaMonkey 1.0.9 and 1.1.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via vectors related to dangling pointers, heap corruption, signed/unsigned, and other issues.
The bug was discovered 05/30/2007. The weakness was shared 05/30/2007 by Nicolas Derouet (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2867 since 05/29/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36608 (CentOS 4 / 5 : devhelp / firefox / yelp (CESA-2007:0400)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.5.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15164. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8965.
