Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.15 and SeaMonkey before 1.1.10 allow remote attackers to force the upload of arbitrary local files from a client computer via vectors involving originalTarget and DOM Range.
The weakness was presented 07/02/2008 by Claudio Santambrogio with Mozilla as MFSA2008-28 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-2805 since 06/20/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33399 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2008:0547)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 2.0.0.15 eliminates this vulnerability.
