A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Windows URL Shortcut Handler. Mozilla 1.9 M8 and earlier, Mozilla Firefox 2 before 2.0.0.15, SeaMonkey 1.1.5 and other versions before 1.1.10, Netscape 9.0, and other Mozilla-based web browsers, when a user accepts an SSL server certificate on the basis of the CN domain name in the DN field, regard the certificate as also accepted for all domain names in subjectAltName:dNSName fields, which makes it easier for remote attackers to trick a user into accepting an invalid certificate for a spoofed web site.
The weakness was disclosed 07/02/2008 by Nils with Mozilla as MFSA2008-31 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2809 since 06/20/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33399 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2008:0547)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115851 (Mozilla Firefox and SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.0.0.15 eliminates this vulnerability.
