A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Office 2000 (Office Suite Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component EPS File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, XP SP3, and 2003 SP2; Office Converter Pack; and Works 8 do not properly parse the length of a PICT file, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PICT file, aka the "Malformed PICT Filter Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-3021.
The issue has been introduced in 06/07/1999. The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2008 by Shaun Colley with Microsoft as MS08-044 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3018 since 07/07/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3354 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110085 (Microsoft Office Filters Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-044)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-044 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
