Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, XP SP3, and 2003 SP2; Office Converter Pack; and Works 8 do not properly parse the length of a PICT file, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PICT file with an invalid bits_per_pixel field, aka the "PICT Filter Parsing Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-3018.
The bug was discovered 08/12/2008. The weakness was published 08/12/2008 by Damian Put with Microsoft as MS08-044 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-044 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4665.
