A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/Xp (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function bits_per_pixel of the component PICT Handler. Microsoft Office 2000 SP3 and XP SP3; Office Converter Pack; and Works 8 do not properly parse the length of a BMP file, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted BMP file, aka the "Malformed BMP Filter Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 09/11/2006. The weakness was shared 08/12/2008 by Shaun Colley with Microsoft as MS08-044 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-3020 since 07/07/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3354 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.
