Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2000 (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component WPG Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, XP SP3, and 2003 SP2; Office Converter Pack; and Works 8 do not properly parse the length of a PICT file, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PICT file, aka the "Malformed PICT Filter Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-3021.
The bug was discovered 08/12/2008. The weakness was released 08/12/2008 by Shaun Colley with Microsoft as MS08-044 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3018 since 07/07/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3354 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33873 (MS08-044: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Filters Could Allow Remote Code Execution (924090)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110085 (Microsoft Office Filters Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-044)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-044 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 18 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4665.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28650), Tenable (33873), SecurityFocus (BID 30597†), OSVDB (47397†) and Secunia (SA31336†).
