Multiple vulnerabilities in the Javascript engine in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.8, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.8, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.5 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted HTML that triggers memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 10/18/2007. The weakness was published 10/21/2007 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5340 since 10/10/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27540 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2007:0979)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165712 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2008:002)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8960.
