Details
A vulnerability has been found in MIT Kerberos 5 (Network Authentication Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function reply of the file ftpd.c of the component Kerberos. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** The reply function in ftpd.c in the gssftp ftpd in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) does not initialize the length variable when auth_type has a certain value, which has unknown impact and remote authenticated attack vectors. NOTE: the original disclosure misidentifies the conditions under which the uninitialized variable is used. NOTE: the vendor disputes this issue, stating " The length variable is only uninitialized if auth_type is neither the KERBEROS_V4 nor GSSAPI ; this condition cannot occur in the unmodified source code."
The bug was discovered 11/15/2007. The weakness was released 12/08/2007 with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at issues.rpath.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5894 since 11/08/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/08/2024).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29991 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : krb5 (krb5-4851)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165712 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2008:002)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38923), Tenable (29991), SecurityFocus (BID 26750†), OSVDB (44333†) and Secunia (SA28636†).
