A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 1.6.3 Kdc (Network Authentication Software) and classified as critical. Use-after-free vulnerability in the gss_indicate_mechs function in lib/gssapi/mechglue/g_initialize.c in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) has unknown impact and attack vectors. NOTE: this might be the result of a typo in the source code.

The bug was discovered 11/15/2007. The weakness was disclosed 12/05/2007 with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5901 since 11/09/2007. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67664 (Oracle Linux 5 : krb5 (ELSA-2008-0164)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155140 (Oracle Enterprise Linux krb5 Security and Bug Fix Update (ELSA-2008-0164)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
