Unspecified vulnerability in Active Directory on Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003, and Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) on XP and Server 2003, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang and restart) via a crafted LDAP request.
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2008 by Thomas Garnier with SkyRecon (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-0088 since 01/02/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2917 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31037 (MS08-003: Vulnerability in Active Directory Could Allow Denial of Service (946538)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90429 (Active Directory and ADAM Vulnerability Could Allow Denial of Service (MS08-003)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11919.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40102), Tenable (31037), SecurityFocus (BID 27638†), Secunia (SA28764†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1019382†). The entries VDB-38706, VDB-40995, VDB-40996 and VDB-41003 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
