A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6/7 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects an unknown code in the library dxtmsft.dll of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Unspecified vulnerability in an ActiveX control (dxtmsft.dll) in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 6 SP1 and SP2, and 7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted image, aka "Argument Handling Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was released 02/12/2008 by AdLab with VenusTech (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0078. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3018 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31044 (MS08-010: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (944533)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100055 (Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS08-010)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5920.
