Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1, 6 SP2, and and 7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by assigning malformed values to certain properties, as demonstrated using the by property of an animateMotion SVG element, aka "Property Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was published 02/12/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0077. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2518 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31044 (MS08-010: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (944533)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100055 (Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS08-010)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5923.
