A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft WebDAV Mini-Redirector XP. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Redirector. Heap-based buffer overflow in the WebDAV Mini-Redirector in Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, and Vista allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted WebDAV response.
The bug was discovered 02/12/2008. The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0080 since 01/03/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90425 (WebDAV Mini-Redirector Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-007)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5906.
