Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function cfdatareplacebytes of the component CoreFoundation. The manipulation of the argument length with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the CFDataReplaceBytes function in the CFData API in CoreFoundation in Apple Mac OS X before 10.5.3 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (crash) via an invalid length argument, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 05/28/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2008 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1030 since 02/26/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32477 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115812 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.3 and Security Update 2008-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-05-28)).
Upgrading to version 10.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42709), Tenable (32477), SecurityFocus (BID 29491†), OSVDB (45699†) and Secunia (SA30430†).
