A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux up to 4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. The International Components for Unicode (ICU) library in Apple Mac OS X before 10.5.3, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, and other operating systems omits some invalid character sequences during conversion of some character encodings, which might allow remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.
The bug was discovered 05/28/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1036 since 02/26/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67807 (Oracle Linux 5 : icu (ELSA-2009-0296)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. Upgrading to version 5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
