Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.10 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Embedded Web Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the embedded web server in Image Capture in Apple Mac OS X before 10.5 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via directory traversal sequences in the URI.
The bug was discovered 05/28/2008. The weakness was presented 06/02/2008 with Apple (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1571 since 03/31/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32477 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115812 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.3 and Security Update 2008-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-05-28)).
Upgrading to version 10.4.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42718), Tenable (32477), SecurityFocus (BID 29501†), OSVDB (45705†) and Secunia (SA30430†).
