Apple iCal 3.0.1 attach/value=uri:s=osumi code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iCal 3.0.1. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument attach/value=uri:s=osumi with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Use-after-free vulnerability in Apple iCal 3.0.1 on Mac OS X allows remote CalDAV servers, and user-assisted remote attackers, to trigger memory corruption or possibly execute arbitrary code via an "ATTACH;VALUE=URI:S=osumi" line in a .ics file, which triggers a "resource liberation" bug. NOTE: CVE-2008-2007 was originally used for this issue, but this is the appropriate identifier.

The bug was discovered 05/21/2008. The weakness was published 06/03/2008 by CORE Security with CORE Security Technologies (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1035 since 02/26/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32477 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115809 (Apple iCal Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6179.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42570), Exploit-DB (31620), Tenable (32477), SecurityFocus (BID 29486†) and OSVDB (45690†).
