A "memory calculation error" in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, and 2007 through SP1; Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 through SP1; and Office 2004 for Mac allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PowerPoint file with crafted list values that trigger memory corruption, aka "Parsing Overflow Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2008 by AdLab with Adlab of Venustech (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-1455 since 03/21/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50058 (MS08-043 / MS08-051: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Could Allow Remote Code Execution (954066 / 949785) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110083 (Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-051)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6159.
