A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component HTML Component Handler. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7 does not perform proper "argument validation" during print preview, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors, aka "HTML Component Handling Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was presented 08/13/2008 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2259 since 05/16/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2701 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33874 (MS08-045: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (953838)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100059 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS08-045)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6292.
