Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 6, and 7 accesses uninitialized memory, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-2254, aka "HTML Object Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was disclosed 08/13/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-2255 since 05/16/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3201 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33874 (MS08-045: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (953838)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100059 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS08-045)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6290.
