The Event System in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista Gold and SP1, and Server 2008 does not properly validate per-user subscriptions, which allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a crafted event subscription request.

The weakness was released 08/13/2008 with Microsoft (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-1457 since 03/20/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33878 (MS08-049: Vulnerabilities in Event System Could Allow Remote Code Execution (950974)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
