A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 3.0.3 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function nsXMLHttpRequest::NotifyEventListeners of the component Listener. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The nsXMLHttpRequest::NotifyEventListeners method in Firefox 3.x before 3.0.4, Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.18, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.18, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 allows remote attackers to bypass the same-origin policy and execute arbitrary script via multiple listeners, which bypass the inner window check.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was released 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-5022 since 11/10/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43714 (CentOS 4 / 5 : thunderbird (CESA-2008:0976)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119094 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2008:0978)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
