A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 2.x (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function AppendAttributeValue of the component Javascript Engine. The AppendAttributeValue function in the JavaScript engine in Mozilla Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.18, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.18, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via unknown vectors that trigger memory corruption, as demonstrated by e4x/extensions/regress-410192.js.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was shared 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-5052 since 11/12/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
