Firefox 3.x before 3.0.4, Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.18, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 allows remote attackers to bypass the protection mechanism for codebase principals and execute arbitrary script via the -moz-binding CSS property in a signed JAR file.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-5023 since 11/10/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36485 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2008:0977)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119094 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2008:0978)).
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
