Mozilla Firefox up to 3.0.3 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 3.0.3 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox 3.x before 3.0.4, Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.18, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.18, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 do not properly escape quote characters used for XML processing, which allows remote attackers to conduct XML injection attacks via the default namespace in an E4X document.

The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was presented 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5024 since 11/10/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43714 (CentOS 4 / 5 : thunderbird (CESA-2008:0976)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119094 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2008:0978)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46584), Tenable (43714), SecurityFocus (BID 32281†), OSVDB (49995†) and Secunia (SA32684†).
