A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function php_getuid of the file etc. The manipulation of the argument error_log with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
PHP 5 before 5.2.7 does not properly initialize the page_uid and page_gid global variables for use by the SAPI php_getuid function, which allows context-dependent attackers to bypass safe_mode restrictions via variable settings that are intended to be restricted to root, as demonstrated by a setting of /etc for the error_log variable.
The bug was discovered 12/05/2008. The weakness was shared 12/04/2008 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-5624 since 12/17/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

Upgrading to version 5.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
