Use-after-free vulnerability in Google Chrome before 17.0.963.56 allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors related to drag-and-drop operations.
The weakness was published 02/15/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk (scarybeasts) with Chromium Development Community as 112259 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3023 since 08/09/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57968 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (2f5ff968-5829-11e1-8288-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119950 (Google Chrome Prior to 17.0.963.56 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 17.0.963.56 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
